FT Overnight Resident Advisor

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Overnight shifts are 11:30pm to 9:30am 

As our direct care staff work with youth that are 18-24 years old, 

we require that applicants are at least 25 years old.

The rate of pay for this position is $15.00/hr


Job Description

JOB TITLE:                Resident Advisor                             DIVISION:             Crisis Shelter                                                              

STATUS:                    Non-Exempt                                    REPORTS TO:            Residence Manager

POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Resident Manager or ARM. The Resident Advisor is responsible for providing shelter supervision (custodial) and delivery of residential services to residents within the framework of the Mission Statement, Five Principles. This position is required to adhere to all agency policies/procedures and practices (time/attendance, cell phone, telecommunications, safety, remaining awake/alert, etc). This position requires on-duty meals and breaks and for employees to sign the attached on-duty meal request form.


Essential functions of Resident Advisorís is to support Case Managers, Supervisors, and other program areas in providing residential services as outlined below:

1.     Provide custodial supervision of the shelter, including coverage of the various areas of the facility.

2.     In compliance with established policies and procedures, provide support for Case Managers and Supervisors,            including, but not limited to, the following:

Sign out TAP cards, as designated;

Pack, tag and store belongings of discharged residents;

Inspect the facility for safety and maintenance;

Log medication and document when residents take their medication;

Answer telephones and monitor residentsí telephone calls;

Complete work orders and requisitions, as needed;

Supervise residents in completion of chores and supervise at client dinner time;

Inspect common areas and bedrooms for cleanliness on a daily basis;

Monitor residents in clothing room;

Complete discharge paperwork;

Build rapport with residents;

Work directly with residents doing triage, (i.e., field questions, ask what residents need, clarify the problem, ask if Case Manager is aware of a problem, etc.);

Be alert to residents and surroundings even during one-on-one conversations;

Function as Person in Charge (PIC), as designated;

Ensure that all residents are in compliance with upstairs bed time at end of program day.

  • Provide support to Human Trafficking victims and residents with higher mental health needs that are permitted  to stay on-site during the day for additional support.
  • Coordinate/facilitate and supervise in-house group activities special activities and outings as needed.
  • Be timely and present at all scheduled meetings, including transitions, staff meetings and training's.
  • Complete written documentation, as needed for residentsí files, Critical Incident Reports (CIR), Transition Book, Special Covenants, other forms, and communication including e-mail as necessary.
  • Develop knowledge of the current community resources and referrals, which may entail attendance at off-site    meetings and training's.
  • Communicate pertinent information to Case Managers, Supervisors, and Supportive Services.
  • Be familiar and comply with agency policies and procedures.  Report any deviations to Supervisor.
  • Understand and integrate the Five Principles of the Covenant House Philosophy, (immediacy, sanctuary, value    communication, structure, and choice).
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor


EDUCATION:  High School Diploma required; Bachelorís Degree in Human Services or related field preferred.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1-2 years experience working with at risk youth. 

SKILLS: Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational skills. Must be computer literate (Word, Outlook, ACCESS, etc.)  Must be a self-starter and team player with the ability to work with other staff members, clients, vendors and the public.

TRANSPORTATION:  Must have valid CA driverís license, good driving record and reliable transportation. May be required to transport clients/staff if needed using agency transportation.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  General business/office environment. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. on occasion, bend, sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.  Some weekend/holiday work may be required.  

KNOWLEDGE:  Adolescent Development, Crisis Intervention, Multi-Cultural Awareness, knowledge/training of Pro-Act, CPR and FIRST AID.
