Wellness Counselor

Job Description:

As our direct care staff work with youth that are 18-24 years old, we require that applicants are at least 25 years old. 

JOB TITLE:              Wellness Counselor                                           

STATUS:                   Part-time, 20 hrs per week. Non-Exempt                                                   

POSITION SUMMARY:  The Wellness Counselor facilitates youth-centered interventions, workshops and groups, including crisis management, risk reduction, treatment readiness and other support and educational groups to youth living in our residential programs. The position is also responsible for providing these services within the framework of the Mission Statement, Five Principles, and the Policies and Procedures of Covenant House California.  Must be committed to the principles of Harm Reduction.  This position requires on-duty meals and breaks and for employees to sign the attached on-duty meal request form.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Meet with youth 1:1 on a daily basis who have come in under the influence, or have expressed an interest in exploring their substance use further.

2. Work collaboratively with the entire team and provides services for all residents that are guided by the principles of harm reduction, are compassionate, trauma informed and relational.

3. Work with residents to identify their needs, collaboratively develop goals, create plans to meet those goals and identify the best services to help them address their needs and reach their goals.

4. Facilitate weekly educational and prevention focused substance use workshops on campus for any resident to attend.

5. Participate in on-campus activities, as well as create opportunities daily to engage residents in activities, over food, basketball, walks, etc. in order to build rapport and increase visibility on campus of the substance use services. 

6. Efficiently identify the needs of residents and link them with appropriate staff to meet their needs most effectively.

7. Participates in case reviews and team meetings among clinical and multi-disciplinary program staff, when appropriate.

8. Participates in agency-wide committees as needed or assigned. 

9. Develop knowledge of the current community resources and referrals, which may entail attendance at off-site meetings and trainings, to increase the network of services available to our residents with substance use challenges

10.Communicate pertinent information to Case Managers, Supervisors and Supportive Services, through daily ETO updates, emails and in person communication.

11.Be familiar and comply with agency policies and procedures.  Report any deviations to supervisor.

12.Understand and integrate the Five Principles of the Covenant House Philosophy (Immediacy, Sanctuary, Value Communication, Structure, and Choice), as well as the Code of Conduct into your daily work and presentation with youth and staff.

13.   Other duties as assigned by supervisor. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS 

EDUCATION: An Associateís degree is required, Bachelorís degree or relevant work experience is desired. Certificate and/or equivalent in substance abuse counseling, addictions or harm reduction is also required.

EXPERIENCE: MUST HAVE 1-2 yearsí experience working with individuals struggling with substance use, along with significant work related or life experience in the field.    

SKILLS:  Knowledge and skill in the implementation of trauma informed services and harm reduction services for transitional age youth. Must be organized, self-motivated team player, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability and willingness to be hands-on with our youth and solve problems as they arise. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.  

WORKING CONDITIONS:  General business/office environment. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. on occasion, bend, sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.  Some weekend/holiday work may be required. 

TRANSPORTATION:  Must have valid CA driverís license, reliable transportation and good driving record.
