FT Employment Specialist

COVENANT HOUSE CALIFORNIA POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:

EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST

This is full time, benefit's eligible position and the starting rate is $19.00 per hour.

Since our direct care staff work with youth that are 18-24 years old, we require that applicants be at least 25 years old. 

  

SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Rapid Rehousing Manager, the Employment Specialist will assist homeless and runaway youth in building employment skills and obtaining entry level and step up employment.  The position will work with residents and non-residents of Covenant House California who are between the ages of 18 to 24.  Essential functions of the position include job search coaching, job matching, networking in the business community, development and maintenance of business partnerships, case management, documentation, and includes a range of supportive duties spanning coordination and facilitating job search groups, dissemination of external materials for posting, field work with clients, teaching of job prep curriculum, facilitating educational assessments, educational counseling, assisting youth to increase their Digital Literacy skills, and curriculum development. The Employment Specialist will work with the North County Homeless Youth Rapid Rehousing Collaborative and will on on-site at Covenant House, Yeah! and East Oakland Community Project.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Employment:

  • Implement individualized plan that is created in conjunction with Primary Case Manager and relates to employability, job search skills, and skills enhancement.  Determine client’s ongoing needs in searching for employment; provide 1:1 support as needed. 
  • Hold regular meetings with assigned clients to address progress and refine focus of search.
  • Ensure each client has the tools and skills to properly search for and find work—including job search techniques (online and personal contact), computer skills (for submitting applications), résumé, job applications, cover letters, follow-up, interview skills, etc. 
  • Teach assigned Job Prep curriculum course. Provide monthly workshops in areas of interviewing skills and retention.
  • Coordination and facilitation of regular weekly, monthly and annual groups and events including, Job Retention group and individual case management.
  • Coordinate “job search” field trips and facilitate individual or small group meetings with clients. 
  • Coordinate and post materials (at all sites) on external Job Fairs.
  • Research and post variety of applicable job listings for clients.
  • Ensure youth are meeting performance objectives with respect to employment progress for RRH program success.

Specialty Areas:

Job Development*: 

  • Actively and assertively seek, develop, and maintain business relationships with local companies for the purpose of securing employment for clients and developing opportunities for external internships, both stand-alone and in conjunction with WIA (Workforce Investment Act).
  • Interface with specific/targeted businesses, as appropriate, to aid individual clients who may have specific work or job search impediments. Document business/job development contacts per department protocols.

Documentation and other:

  • Maintain documentation for tracking of services to clients and their attainment of benchmarks.  Ensure that all client files have current and complete notes and documentation with regard to receipt of educational/vocational services. Enter all data on time and correctly to support program evaluation and outcomes tracking. Update daily log and input data into the database as requested by RRH Manager.  
  • Ensures ongoing communication with other CHC departments and CBO partners serving their clients.  As assigned, position will attend CHC program trainings, daily client progress meeting, and CHC taskforce meetings. Employment Specialist will all attend all TAY RRH collaborative meetings.
  • Collaborates with Wellness Center and other CBO staff on special projects related increasing employment for youth.
  •  Provides “team” support to all Wellness Center staff in the daily operation of the facility and program.
  • Coordinate and facilitate client incentives used for programing.
  • Attend appropriate events  and serve as liaison to external organizations promoting employment of “at risk” youth

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:  BA /BS degree in Vocational Education, Social Sciences or a related field.                 

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 2 years experience in youth or young adult residential services, educational and/ or employment counseling with the client population.  Knowledge and experience working with vocational programs and educational systems. 

SKILLS: Must have knowledge of adolescent development and ability to teach at-risk youth. Must have very strong communication and organizational skills.  Must be computer literate (Word, Outlook, ACCESS, etc.)  Must be a self-starter and team player with the ability to work with other staff members, clients, vendors and the public. 

TRANSPORTATION:Must have valid CA Driver’s license, reliable transportation, a good driving record and be able to drive residents to activities using CHC vans.

WORKING CONDITIONS: General business/office environment. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. on occasion, bend, sit and stand for prolonged periods of time.  Some weekend work may be required. Full-Time 40 hours per week.
