JOB TITLE:  Part Time Digital Dove Instructor                                                            

DIVISION: Activities

ABOUT DIGITAL DOVE:  Digital Dove is a Covenant House California (CHC) initiative that provides filmmaking and media workshops for homeless and at-risk youth at CHCís Los Angeles facility.  The goal of Digital Dove is to use the collaborative art of filmmaking to foster community, confidence, teamwork, life-skills, employment skills,  self-expression, and a sense of opportunity and hope for its participants.

POSITION SUMMARY:  Under the supervision of the Activities Coordinator, the Digital Dove Instructor oversees and implements the Digital Dove program.  Essential functions include ongoing development of the curriculum, instructing sessions, coordinating special events, managing and maintaining the program's resources (such as camera equipment, editing stations, reference materials and the like), liaising with the entertainment community, providing on-line supervision to staff/volunteers and interns assigned to assist with program, interfacing with sponsoring entities and others for the purpose of maintaining program funding, developing community partnerships, overseeing the HBO mentorship program, regularly posting program updates and videos on the Digital Dove website and social media accounts, and the planning and facilitation of the Digital Dove budget.  The position requires someone who can work independently while respecting and responding to the interests of all participating program partners. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Evaluating and developing the core curriculum

Recruiting, interviewing, and prepping residents interested in participating in the program

Identifying/coordinating guest speakers and mentors

Instructing Digital Dove workshops and classes throughout the year

Maintaining, repairing and replacing equipment & expendables

Supervising the post-production of student projects, including the generation of DVDs for participants and uploads to social media sites

Liaising with the entertainment community to identify and coordinate internship and work-study opportunities for Digital Dove graduates, including the HBO mentorship.

Managing the growing library of original footage and finished projects

Coordinating graduation & screenings

Identifying and facilitating opportunities for submission of Digital Dove generated films to film festivals

Providing on-line supervision to staff and volunteers assigned to assist with program workshops and activities

Creating and administering the annual operating budget of Digital Dove

Providing fiscal, expense, and other programming documentation as required by CHC and Advisory Board Members

Serving as liaison and facilitator to HBO and other potential funding sources, helping to ensure programís ongoing financial stability

Other duties as assigned by supervisor

 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

 

EDUCATION:  Bachelorís degree in Film, Communications, or related field.

 

EXPERIENCE:  Minimum of 2 yearsí experience developing and implementing long-term projects related to filmmaking, film industry and/or social services. Teaching experience and experience working and/or volunteering with at-risk youth.  

 

SKILLS:    Working knowledge of the filmmaking process, expertise in editing platforms (Final Cut Pro 7), proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, social media platforms, and the ability to maintain and troubleshoot  cameras and sound equipment. Strong organization, written, and verbal communication skills.  Ability to work and problem solve independently.

 

TRANSPORTATION: Must have valid CA Driverís license and be able to drive residents to activities using CHC vans.

 

WORKING:   25 hours per week (Part-Time). Non-exempt position.  Schedule to be determined with some weekend and evening hours.

 

EQUIPMENT USED:  Filmmaking equipment, computers, calculators, fax machines, telephone and other equipment required.

 

JOB FUNCTIONS IN MORE DETAIL:

DAILY TASKS:

  • Punch in/out per CHC guidelines (8-hour day maximum, over 6 hours requires a minimum 30 minute break, 25 hours a week)
  • Lock up Career Center as required (if you are the last one, lock necessary doors and gates, turn off lights and set alarm)
  • Check CHC and Digital Dove e-mails

WEEKLY TASKS:

  • Report class attendance to case managers and Activities Coordinator
  • Report intern attendance (if any) to Intern Manger (bi-weekly)
  • Provide support to students with film-related internships outside of CHC, such as the HBO internship.
  • Plan class schedule and coordinate with students/Activities/CHC
  • Plan curriculum on the whole and plan classes individually
  • Sign time card generated from computer punch-ins (bi-weekly)
  • Complete general project related tasks such as editing, mixing, DVD creation, uploading to social media sites, etc. to move projects along.
  • Sign time cards for CHC payroll (bi-weekly)

ONGOING RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Update the Board on a monthly call regarding classes, finances, etc.
  • Submit expenses to CHC for reimbursement (monthly)
  • Complete grant-specific reports and updates as necessary
  • Maintain and update website/publicize Digital Dove to outside world
  • Manage the growing library of original footage and finished projects
  • Coordinate graduation & informational screenings
  • Identify and facilitate opportunities for submission of Digital Dove generated films to film festivals
  • Provide on-line supervision to staff and volunteers assigned to assist with program workshops and activities
  • Create and administer the annual operating budget of Digital Dove
  • Work with CHCís Development Department to facilitate program funding
  • Seek in-kind donations of film equipment/software
  • Manage Digital Dove library of books & DVDs
  • Maintain and update software (Final Cut Pro, etc.), hardware (cameras, computers, etc.) and expendables (tapes, batteries, etc.)
